Chapter Eleven

Meanwhile in the barn.

“Bless it! This stupid mule got bitten by one of those wolves!” Samson exclaimed.

David raised his eyes from cleaning the saddle when Samson let this known. He knew his father and their new mother were back at the cottage. Goodness knows what would be conversed among them and he didn’t want to even think about it. But when he heard this, he paused in his cleaning when he asked. “Are you going to shoot him? He’s of no use to us if he’s out like.”

“Injured and you’re going to fire him?” Samuel asked.

He appeared from the tack room and David looked at him as he entered. He was not as shaken from his ride as from before when everyone was traveling. It was approaching the time when the sun would set and David wondered how their new mother was going to cook for them. He smirked to himself when he heard Samson answer. “Yes. I need to get the gun. Father’s not going to pleased knowing this and when I checked to see if there was a possibly of healing him, the answer is no. David?”

“Yes?”

“Do you have the gun ready?” Samson asked as he exited the stall. David knew the other brothers’ were occupied and his father was with their new mother. He nodded as Samuel, who was the older twin, folded his arms as he peered at the mule. He was on the ground of the stall and David knew Samuel wanted to be present when the animal was eliminated. David turned to Samson as he replied. “Wait here. I’ll go and get it. And in the meantime,” he turned to Samuel, “if Caleb appears inform him the mule is dead.”

“He’s not going to like knowing that.” Another voice answered as Samuel nodded. He took a step away from the stall so Samson could enter the main part of the barn as David peered at Solomon. He’d been in another stall taking the hay out when he overhead this from his brothers. He looked at those present as he added. “Caleb loves that mule as if he’s his buddy.”

“Yes we all know that.” Samson responded. David felt the authoritive manner of his brother when he looked at Samson. Samson was muscular and tall but he was also gentle and understanding. Yet David never forgot how his brother fired all those wolves as they were racing to their cottage earlier. As he made his way to the room where the tool would be used to take the mule, David listened as Samson said. “I know that, Solomon. But with what has occurred we have to take his life. I wasn’t able to fix his leg and when a mule is out there’s no choice but to take their life.”

“It’s kind of not fair to do it but we have to.” Samuel’s voice answered.

David by this point reached the room where Samson needed the tool.

He too disliked knowing they would be bidding farewell to their beloved
